We are a team of scientists at THL and University of Turku performing multi-disciplinary research ranging from classical epidemiology to multi-omics analysis. In addition to general cardiovascular epidemiology, our research focuses on the epidemiology of hypertension in large scale population cohorts.
Investigating new, more accurate methods for measuring blood pressure.
A project with a goal to genotype up to 500 000 unique Finnish blood samples and associate the genetic data with nationwide health records.
Our goal is to study the impact of age of hypertension onset on cardiovascular disease risk.
A consortium of 26 European cardiovascular disease cohort studies with >300,000 participants.
Studying the interrelations of gut microbiome, plasma metabolome, and genome in the pathophysiology of hypertension.
A joint EU-Canada project to establish a cross-border data sharing and multi-cohort cardiovascular research platform.
Professor Teemu Niiranen, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist, epidemiologist and a clinical hypertension specialist. His research on hypertension in large population cohorts has led to >200 publications that are cited by the European, American, British, and Japanese clinical hypertension guidelines. These publications include first-author articles in BMJ, Circulation, European Heart Journal, and JAMA Cardiology.
After finishing his PhD and clinical training, Dr. Niiranen received in-depth training in cardiovascular disease epidemiology and omics during a post-doctoral period at the Framingham Heart Study. He was granted tenure as Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Turku in 2020. He is also employed as a Medical Specialist by the National Institute for Health and Welfare and chairs the work of the Cardiometabolic Clinical Expert Group of the FinnGen study, a project with a goal to genotype up to 500 000 unique Finnish blood samples.
Dr. Niiranen has received young investigator awards from the American and Finnish Societies of Hypertension, and the American Heart Association. He is an editorial board member of Hypertension, the leading journal in hypertension research.
